JOINT HEALTH: KEEP YOUR JOINTS MOVING!

Last updated 5 years ago

Do you have aching, creaking pain in your joints? Joint health is extremely
important to keep you moving and feeling good! Did you know that not all joint
pain is arthritis? Joint pain can be caused by injury or other conditions affecting
ligaments, cartilage, bones, and tendons around the joint. Pain, tenderness and
sometimes localized warmth and swelling can be symptoms of a non-arthritic joint
condition.

Joint pain is uncomfortable and can hinder your ability to stay active and healthy.
Below are some ideas from RealAge.

• Weight and Diet: To reduce pressure, it is important to make sure you are at
a healthy weight. Those extra pounds can really take a toll. In addition, eating
vegetables high in calcium will help build stronger bones, while caffeine in
excess can weaken bones. Also try foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and those
packed with vitamins C, K, and D for a pain fighting boost!

• Get Moving: It is also crucial to get up and get moving! A common
misconception of joint pain is that exercise will aggravate joint pain, but
keeping joints active can helps to reduce swelling. Be sure to start off with
low impact activities, like swimming or yoga. Take time to warm up and
stretch to keep muscles loose and limber.

•Treat Yourself Right: Use heat and ice to your advantage. Taking a warm
bath or using a heating pack can relieve pain and stiffness. Cool therapies
such as cold packs and bags of ice can reduce swelling and pain in joints.

•If you have new or worsening pain, talk to your doctor about establishing a joint
